Fine Arts - Boarding High School - Students

The arts are an integral part of academic and extra-curricular life at Lakeside. As part of the BC Ministry of Education curriculum, students explore the fundamentals of theory, design and construction in the visual, dramatic and musical arts. Small class instruction and extensive studio time allow every student to develop their creative and expressive abilities in all areas of the arts. In addition, the Arts Program at Lakeside Preparatory Academy serve as a creative and expressive outlet for students set apart from the day to day stresses of studying in a new language. The Schools Teachers strive to balance the academic rigours of these courses with ample opportunity for students to release the pressures of a challenging program of study.

In the first term, students focus on the Visual Arts with studies in drawing, painting, mixed-media and three-dimensional art forms. Our certified teachers build learning units that are designed to increase students appreciation of art forms from a variety of cultures and time periods, reflecting the diverse student body at Lakeside. One highlight of this year’s program was a student art gallery showing of works inspired by famous artists from ancient to modern eras.

The second term focuses upon the dramatic and musical arts, with individual, small class and school projects. In this year’s program, students have been introduced to musical theory and expression through Lakeside’s unique guitar program. In this popular class, students learn the fundamentals of musical theory while tackling the challenge of performing their favourite songs. In drama classes, students further their studies in the English language with a variety of exercises and projects. Students put their English studies into practice as they prepare monologues, take part in improvisation games and mount a student cent red year-end school play. From designing costumes or lights to performance, students with a wide range of strengths and interests find an outlet for creative expression in Lakeside’s integrated drama program.

Outside the classroom, students continue their explorations in a wide variety of extra-curricular clubs. This year, students have explored advanced studies in guitar, drama and drawing technique, along with hands-on projects in web design, traditional and modern crafts, needlepoint, sewing and photography.
